Breaches are awful, but can teach us great ways to protect ourselves. A security company called SpyCloud analyzed 1.7 billion username and password combinations found in leaked records. More than half of people used the same password for multiple accounts. Many also used very simple passwords that are easier for a criminal to hack without access to breached data. Up to 70% were still using exposed passwords from old (over a year past) breaches.
- Change your password immediately if a breach has been reported. You can check https://haveibeenpwned.com/ to see whether your existing email accounts, phone numbers, or passwords are part of a known breach.
- Use high quality unique passwords and store them securely. (Read more on our password management blog.)
- Enable multifactor authentication. It adds a valuable layer of protection and hinders the bad guys from easily accessing your accounts.
