BlackMatter Ransomware

Threat Alert: BlackMatter

BlackMatter Ransomware

What’s the Matter?

BlackMatter ransomware surfaced in July 2021. Its signature?  BlackMatter identifies data hosts and shared drives. It then saves the data, encrypts the data, and deletes any backups it can access.

BlackMatter is a possible rebrand of DarkSide, a similar ransomware.  DarkSide is most noted for the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack in late Spring. CISA, FBI, and NSA published a cybersecurity advisory this week about BlackMatter. You can access it here.

What’s Ransomware-as-a-Service?

You can hire somebody for just about any job. In ransomware-as-a-Service (or RaaS), the people who code a malware are a step removed from the felt crime. They develop the malware just like any other software developer. Then, they lease it to other criminals for a cut of the profits.

Reducing Your Risk

The US agencies had quite the list of recommendations for how an organization can prevent falling victim to BlackMatter or any other ransomware scheme. But what simple steps can you take to reduce your risk?

  1. Create secure backups of vital information/files.
  2. Password Hygiene
    • Pick long, complex passwords that do not include repeating sequences.
    • Use a unique password for each account or login.
    • Change your passwords routinely.
  3. Use multifactor authentication wherever possible. (For a quick summary, visit our blog Enabling Multifactor Authentication)
  4. Patch and update operating systems and software.
  5. Separate your in-house and guest wi-fi networks.
