Copyright Infringement Phishing
Original work is hard to prove in a world where nearly anyone can publish online. Copyrights meant to protect that work are still taken seriously, but many users are unfamiliar with the specifics. A recent phishing scam plays on this unfamiliarity. It lures users into clicking on a link, claiming it is a way to object to a phony accusation of copyright infringement on a social media site. The phishing scheme then leads to well-crafted “verification pages” requiring your social media credentials.
- Keep an eye out for phishing red flags. Do not allow a few signs of legitimacy to convince you if something seems suspicious.
- If you are afraid a complaint has been lodged against you, go directly to the site issuing the notice instead of responding by clicking a link.
- Enable multifactor authentication whenever it is available. This extra step will help ensure a hacker needs more than just your username and password to hack your accounts.
