5 tips to help
Find secure apps
Tech teams often warn of the malware hidden in some apps, and new bulletins surface frequently that mention the apps taken down from various stores due to misuse. The apps you download to your mobile phone greatly affect the security of that device—and that includes the security of any information you access with it. A great way to protect your mobile phone’s security is to beware the apps you load onto it.
1. Download from a trusted source.
The Apple App Store and Google Play are good sources for applications. The apps present are not guaranteed secure, but Apple and Google are interested in supplying a quality product. They want to stay trusted resources for paid and free applications and actively sift through the apps they offer.
2. Know your limits.
Does your GPS app need to know your location in order to work properly? Probably. Does that game you are considering as a way to pass the time need the same information? Probably not. Read the permissions an application requests before downloading it, then keep up with Privacy Policies as they are updated. If an app for personal use requires more information than makes you comfortable, decline the application.
3. Consider easy to find information.
Rating and review tampering occurs. Still, a sky-high number of downloads and reviews is difficult to fake. Further, release from a publisher that has a good reputation for security and quality lends credibility to a mobile phone app.
4. Pay attention to warnings.
If your operating system flags an app as insecure, trust the warning. You can invite your system’s input on Android devices in the privacy settings.
5. Refuse what is too good to be true.
Free options are not always the best option. Remember that the app has to generate money for the developer somehow. This may be due to supporting a known brand such as your bank. Alternatively, it may be that the app sells your information or pretends to be legitimate when it contains malware.
