Google Voice Based Scams
Summary
Google Voice provides Google customers a phone number to use from an app on their computer or mobile phone for standard calls and text messaging. Scammers have been posing as potential buyers or people with information on a lost pet on peer-to-peer forums like Craigslist and missing pet sites. The criminals then claim to be making sure the victim is not a scammer by sending a Google authentication code…which they use to establish Google Voice accounts in victims’ names. They use the accounts as an avenue to both carry out further scams and to compromise victims’ mail accounts.
- Never share verification codes with others.
- Do not assume somebody is trustworthy just because they find you on a local site.
If you’ve been scammed:
- Report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov
- Report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov
- Regain control of that Google Voice account on their support page.
