Keeping Your PIN Secure
Summary
Many of us cover the keypad at ATMs, grocery stores, and gas stations to keep prying eyes off our PIN numbers. It is a low-effort way to increase account security, and it is a great habit to keep people from skimming our PINs. But paying attention to form can keep our PIN more secure yet.
Researchers trained a program to guess PINs of individuals with surprising accuracy based on recordings of them keying in their PIN while covering the keypad.
For Greater Security:
- Opt for longer PINs where available. The longer the PIN, the more trouble the program had guessing it.
- Cover as much of your hand as possible. The more the subject covered his or her hand, the more trouble the program had guessing the PIN.
