Maintenance
Maintaining Your Smartphone
Just like your car, your mobile phone will perform at its peak if you put a little effort into maintaining it. If you do not maintain your phone, figurative and literal gunk may build up and shorten the lifespan of your device.
Areas to maintain:
The Physical Device
Remove your protective case. If it is made of plastic, silicone, or another durable material, give it a good washing with a toothbrush and some warm soapy water.
Use a slightly damp microfiber cloth or a specialty cleaning wipe to clean the screen and exterior of the phone.
Gently use a toothpick or a tiny tool specially designed for the job to carefully pry grime and debris from the ports. Make sure the phone and case are completely dry before recasing your phone.
The Operating System
Updating your mobile phone gives you access to the latest improvements in your operating system’s form and function. Much more importantly, updating installs security patches. These patches close vulnerabilities discovered in the operating system itself, making it harder for bad guys to take advantage of your phone.
Downloaded Applications
Application developers release patches for features and security much like the operating system developers. Make sure to download updates they have made available so your apps are patched and ready to go. Delete apps you do not use anymore. Make sure you close any accounts associated with them so the login cannot be hacked and used by the bad guys.
Review the permissions allowed different applications on your device. On iPhones, this can be done by going to Settings, then Privacy & Security. On Android phones, this is accessed by going to Settings, then Privacy, and Permission manager. Make sure to limit the access you grant each app to a scope you deem reasonable.
