3 Tips to Staying Secure After a Breach

Have you experienced a password breach? A recent study from the Identity Theft Resource Center polled US consumers and found that 55% of social media users have experienced password breach. A big red flag was that fewer than half of them changed their passwords to these accounts. If you get a breach alert, take it seriously. Here are 3 simple tips to help you stay as secure as you can.

1. Use strong, unique passwords.

The most secure passwords are long, complex, and unique. Why unique? Because the dark web is a great shortcut. If one account associated with you is breached, cybercriminals often try the password they find on the dark web with any other accounts they can find. If you need more tips on passwords or password managers, you can find them on our blog Password Management Made Easy.

2. Change your passwords.

Changing passwords routinely is a great habit. Even if you do not, make sure you change your password immediately after receiving notice of a breach. Do not click a link to do so, as it may be a phishing attempt. Instead, log in as you normally would and change your password there.

3. Enable multifactor authentication.

Whether on your social media account or your online banking account, use multifactor authentication (MFA) wherever it is offered. MFA ensures that anyone requesting access to your account needs more than just a password. This extra layer is not infallible, but does increase your security by leaps and bounds.
